The town of the Villa
Poggio a Caiano lies at the meeting point of two imaginary straight lines: one drawn between Florence and Pistoia, the other between Prato and the Montalbano hills. From the low hill that gives the town its name, there is a splendid view over the Ombrone and Bisenzio plain, the cities of Prato and Florence, and the countryside leading towards Pistoia and its Apennines. It was no accident that Lorenzo de' Medici chose this very hill to build his villa, the dominant feature of the town: the history of Poggio a Caiano is closely bound to that of the building of the Medici Villa.
