Flavours & Traditions Square
discovering a territory, tasting local specialities, zero-kilometre shopping
An appointment with ZERO-KILOMETRE shopping, the well-known short supply chain, called
Piazza dei Sapori & Saperi (Flavours & Traditions Square), paired with the craft market — crafts only with on-site demonstrations — antiques and collectibles fair, held every third Sunday of the month.
This initiative, part of the programme of events organised by the Pro Loco and the Municipal Administration of Poggio a Caiano in collaboration with
the Provincial Coldiretti, aims to be a pleasant and delicious journey of discovery along the Wine Route of Carmignano and the typical products of the province of Prato, through the
customs of its people and the flavours of a land unique in the world. Thanks to the wonderful combination of art, food and environment, we have put together a programme full of surprises and attractions (special evening openings, concerts, small street performances, promotions and offers), with the specific aim of bringing as many people as possible closer to the reality of Poggio a Caiano, still largely waiting to be discovered.
An event, Piazza dei Sapori & Saperi, not to be missed: it will be a true "journey of taste", dedicated to all food lovers, discovering products and flavours centred on the world of the countryside. A route made up of various themed itineraries, designed outside the town walls and differentiated based on the area's typical products, scenic attractions and the natural and hospitality resources found in the Prato area: from the Carmignano area (land of Carmignano DOC and DOCG wine, DOP extra virgin olive oil and DOP chestnuts) to the hills of Montalbano and the Bisenzio Valley (places where Cinta Senese pigs are raised and excellent honey and DOP preserves are produced). These initiatives will feature cultural events (exhibitions, conferences), cooking classes and tastings (wines with visits to the cellars, oils with visits to the oil mills, grappa with visits to the distilleries), as well as visits to farms with tastings of their products (dishes made with Calvana-breed beef, Cinta Senese cured meats, biscuits and sweets also made with chestnut flour, with visits to the mills where the chestnuts are ground).
There will also be no shortage of cultural attractions organised for the occasion, in addition, of course, to those represented by the splendid Medici Villas of Poggio a Caiano and Artimino, by
Pontormo's masterpiece in Carmignano, by the age-old parish churches nearby, and by the new archaeological museum of Artimino, the Etruscan necropolises and the fortified castles.
There will be many places to enjoy in company, many spaces devoted to selling and tasting products, right up to the "Pro Loco refreshment point" where visitors can taste recipes and traditional dishes prepared exclusively with local ingredients.
More than on any other occasion, with the
Piazza dei Sapori & Saperi it will be possible to experience first-hand the commitment and love that Coldiretti farmers dedicate to their work and the passion with which they strive to promote the short supply chain in people's everyday lives.
The aim of the event is above all to shine new light on towns not yet sufficiently known and appreciated, such as Poggio a Caiano,
especially at a time when tourism, too, seems to be affected by the difficult economic period we are going through.
